Chris P. MenzelTexas Lacrosse Expo is pleased to announce the addition of 27-year lacrosse veteran Chris Menzel to its staff.  Chris began his lacrosse career in 1982 as a freshman at Texas A&M University playing defense and long-stick midfield.  Through the years, his responsibilities grew as he was elected as the club’s Vice President in 1985 and President in 1986.  In 1986, he was also selected to serve on the university’s Intramural/Recreational Sports Finance Committee which disperses the funds allocated by TAMU Athletic Department for intramural/recreational sports clubs.  The highlight of his college years on the field came in 1985 when he was named a member of the Southwest Lacrosse Association’s College All-Star Team to play the Australian National Touring Team.

Settling in Houston after college, Chris joined friends Steve Mathiason, Wallace Kahn, David Green, and Chris Buechner to establish Houston Metropolitan Lacrosse Club in 1989.  Houston Metro played in the Southwest Lacrosse Association Club Division from 1990 until 1995 when the club joined the Gulf Coast Lacrosse Association where it still plays today.  Chris served the team as Vice President/Secretary from 1991 to 1996 and played on the GCLA Championship team in 1996.

After that season, Chris retired as a player.  Trading in his jersey for a zebra suit, Chris began his second lacrosse career as an official.  In 1998, he became a member of the Collegiate Officials Committee and Men’s Division Officials Council, the organization that oversees NCAA qualified officials and governs national level game assignments.  He was recently credentialed as a US Lacrosse Clinician for District VIII of the Men’s Division Officials Committee which oversees the training of new lacrosse officials at all levels of play from youth to NCAA.  As a member of the Southwest Lacrosse Officials Association, Chris was elected to the board of Governors in 2004.  He was elected Chairman of that board in 2005 and still serves in that capacity today.

During his 13 years as an official, he is especially proud of these career highlights:

  • Crew chief for the 2003 Lone Star Alliance championship
  • Crew member of the 2004 Lone Star Alliance championship
  • Crew chief for the 2005 Texas High School Lacrosse League Division II championship
  • Crew chief for the 2006 Texas High School Lacrosse League Division II championship
  • Crew member of the Texas High School Lacrosse League championship Division I games in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008
  • Southwest League Officials Association representative at the prestigious Vail Lacrosse Tournament in 2004
In 2009, Chris retired from the field permanently and focused his attention and talents to the expansion of lacrosse throughout Texas through recruitment, training, and evaluation of officials; taking an active role in various lacrosse volunteer and administrative organizations; and joining the staff of Texas Lacrosse Expo as Lacrosse Consultant.
